Spring Luncheon, 2012

(The 2012 Invitation–click to see larger.)

The Spring Luncheon (formerly known as The Mother Daughter Luncheon) was today. This was year ten, and we changed the name to be more all-inclusive. At least, we changed the name on the invitation, but we still called it Motherdaughterluncheon. I have wonderful neighbors who helped with photos and getting ready (thanks Rick and Ruth)–and my own family pitched in magnificently.

Victoria stayed home to help me yesterday. . .she cleaned and made bean salad and chocolate flowers and when I was giving her directions for something, she said, “Yes, I know how to do a few things.” And she does. . .I forget I’ve been teaching her. She was quite the hostess today as well. She told me that she taught everyone how to play croquet. I said, “They didn’t know about croquet?” She said, “No. . .they were all like, ‘What’s croquet???’ and I told them it was golf for girls.” I guess that’s about as good an explanation as any. I had a photo of her making the chocolates. She was standing like a stork with one of her long, long legs folded up–her foot planted on the inside of her thigh. I accidentally deleted it however, so I told her we would have to re-enact it. She said, “I won’t re-enact making chocolate flowers. So. . .I’ll just have to make MORE chocolate flowers.” She drives a hard bargain, but I think I’ll keep her.

Thad and Tony ran traffic control for me again this year, though we were a smaller group than normal. Thad also vacuumed the game room, breakfast room, kitchen, AND foyer without anyone asking him to. It didn’t hurt that he got to use the shop vac and he loves to vacuum, but what is up with my kids being all dependable and helpful and stuff??? You’d think they were growing up. I really AM very proud of them. . .earlier, though, Thad was wanting to play with his Beyblades. When I gave him the “Um–no sir, we have people coming over and I need help” siren, he walked through the kitchen, slowly, shoulders drooping. As he rounded the bar he said, “I know. I know. Pick those shoulders up.” Then he walked into the pantry and closed the door behind him. He likes to go in there sometimes when he needs to be alone.

He also asked me tonight if I’d “like to see some science in action?” I said, “Sure.” So he showed me about static electricity holding a balloon against the wall. He said, “There is a positive charge and a negative charge, and I like to think of them this way. The positive charge has four hooks, and the negative charge only has two. So the positive charge stays still, while the negative charge is easily swept away.” *Ahem.* I said, as I often do, “Well, boy. Where did you hear that?” And he said, “In my head.”

‘Twas a good day. Hope yours was too.

Create or Die

I have told you of my quirks before. . .remember the whole even vs. odd number thing???? So–this is not a quirk–this is a NECESSITY. Sometimes I have to do something creative. . .something pretty. . .something whimsical or I feel like I will shrivel up and die. Literally. Either that or really injure someone.

So. Today was one of those days as writing about library trends (though helping me to attain my masters) is not what I consider “creative.” Or pretty. After school, I betook myself to Hobby Lobby and there I found (DRUM ROLL PLEASE). . .

INSPIRATION for the Mother & Daughter Luncheon. If you are in the habit of being invited, you are invited again this year. We are decorating with blue and white (pink flowers) in an Anthropologie eclectic style, using my blue and white dishes and gee-gaws, borrowing a lovely cloth pennant banner from my friend Daphne, even kicking around the possibility of having it in the clearing.

ANYWAY. I found THESE PLATES on the CLEARANCE aisle. I love these plates. I love that they were on CLEARANCE. I love that they have birds on them. And Robin’s egg blue eggs. And SCRIPTURE. And MOST of all I love that when I described them to Victoria over the phone (since she is now old enough to have SEVERAL OPINIONS), her exact words–SIGHT UNSEEN–were, “Oh, Mommy!!! I LOVE THEM ALREADY!!!!”

I will pair them with some blue and white napkins I found at IKEA several years ago–like five or more–and look it. CUTENESS. (We also have some blue and white bandana napkins from Target last year that will work their way in as well.)

We have chosen the font and the quote for the invitation. See?

Who knew Robin Williams would say ANYTHING appropriate to put on a girly luncheon invitation? Will wonders never cease?

THEN–in the midst of finding out that one of my professors had given me a zero for an assignment I turned in. . .and having to take it up with her via e-mail. . .and folding laundry. . .and sniffing VEHEMENTLY with my fourth cold of the school year???? I thought of a cupcake decor idea!!!! Oh yes, indeedy, I did. And I told Victoria–and she bounced around–but THAT will be a surprise for later.

This is what I LOVE doing. . .this makes me HAPPY. This does not CAUSE stress–it ALLEVIATES stress. Stress is caused by all of the OTHER things I have to do–like work on something other than lovely, creative things. (Click on photos to see BIG.)

Part 1 of the Mother & Daughter luncheon: PUHLEEEEEZZZZZZZ

Okay. . .something is amok. First (the not amok part) I just returned from 24 hours with my friend Sarah. To read her version of our outing and catch a glimpse of two of the ***HOTTTTTOOTTTOOOOTEST*** babes you’ve ever seen, go here and read “Quick Getaway.”

Secondly, I have been trying and trying and trying to get some things posted regarding the mother/daughter soiree. Everything was all fine. . .but I keep getting some message in red and I’m about to scream. . .so to maintain my sanity and get some sleep, here are the photos of dessert. For some reason I think a photo of Victoria and me is gumming up the works. If you read this blog, you can surely put it all together. A good time was had by all–lots of pink–we will have to forego the witty comments. ARGH!!!!!! I need some of the desserts shown here.

The girlies have different cupcakes each year. Pink polka dot cupcakes, birdhouses, teacups, adorned with flower shaped teapots, and this year some lacy design that was lovely though didn’t offer much in the way of icing. They forgave since I adorned the wrappers with pink bows. The mommies get the same old thing every year. . .homemade carrot cake (Carolyn’s recipe) with GOBS of cream cheese frosting. I don’t think Carolyn would mind me sharing the recipe if you’d like. It is incredibly yummy and very, very, very fattening. Keep on going to see the rest of the photos in part two. . .

Part 2 of the Mother and Daughter Luncheon.

Well. . .here it is in all its glory. . .Mother & Daughter luncheon fare. . .a table full of food meant to be enjoyed by women of all ages no matter their food preferences. This year the Sun Chips were a big hit. The two small wrought iron chairs I got at Hobby Lobby for a song comingled with lots and lots of pink and white flowers.

This is the CLASSIC Mother & Daughter Luncheon photo. Savannah sports that 21st Century girl look. . .cute hat, white lace gloves, swishy pink frock, bare feet, arm akimbo on cocked hip, daring anyone to command her to lay her hoe down and get out of the sand box. LOVE IT!!!!
Pink, white, pink and white, and a little more pink don’t you think?
AND pink toile. Who can resist???? The ribbon topiary was a lot of fun to make. . .
Victoria post party holding Fluffy Oreo Rocket Langley. He is a good bunny, but he makes me sneeze and need oxygen.
Not to be out done, Thad made an appearance and was given a Grave Digger Monster Truck since he was very sad that he didn’t get to stay at the party. . .he refused to wear pink, you see. Actually, he and his Daddy went to the Arboretum and fed bread to the snapping turtles and pancake turtles and had a grand ole time. . .plus we saved him a cupcake.

Beautiful

Well, yesterday was the Mother & Daughter luncheon. We could not have ordered a more beautiful day. . .perfect temperature, breezy, gorgeous blue sky with clouds floating through. It was just wonderful. We ended up with 35 women and girls here. . .and a good time was had by all. I haven’t gotten everything put away yet. I’ll take another crack at it tomorrow. And since I don’t have another soiree to plan for awhile, my next goal is to learn how to put photos on this blog so our wonderful day can be viewed by you. Fun, fun, fun.
